Summary of Messages

A credible communicator is at least one of the following qualities:
  • trustworthiness
  • relatable to audience
  • attractiveness
  • credibility
Emma Stone has attractiveness and relatability to a female young adult audience, while Regis Philbin has trustworthiness and credibility.

The fear-inducing message works because it has a fear inducing message, followed by a step by step sollution to the problem. Bolded text is the fear inducing message, underlined text is the solution.

If you continue tanning without applying spf 30 or higher, you significantly increase your risk of becoming another one of the two million people to develop a skin cancer who could have easily prevented it. That’s two million cases, with weeks and weeks of intense treatment that could have been prevented by taking five minutes to apply sunscreen. Block the sun and its harmful UV rays by applying sun tan Lotion 15 minutes prior to going outside to significantly reduce the risk of developing a preventable cancer.

The simple message with distractors is good because it is a simple cartoon image that appears not too serious, but carries a very clear message..fake bake and get cancer.

The complex two-sided message is also effective because it offers an unbais opinion to the situation.  It is less likely for an audience to believe information if it is not one sided.

Two-sided message

Experts say that by applying sunscreen with a spf of 30 or higher, 15 minutes prior to exposure from the sun, and re-applying sun screen approximately every two hours or after swimming or sweating heavily, this decreases the risk of developing a preventable skin cancer.

Some say the idea that sunscreen prevents cancer is a myth. It’s a myth promoted by a profit-seeking tag-team effort between the cancer industry and the sunscreen industry. The sunscreen industry makes money by selling lotion products that actually contain cancer-causing chemicals. It then donates a portion of that money to the cancer industry through non-profit groups like the American Cancer Society which, in turn, run heart-breaking public service ads urging people to use sunscreen to “prevent cancer.”

In recent year's experts have listened and discussed this radical complaint and found no chemicals were used that increased the risk of cancer, however, most sun lotions didn't protect from UVA rays, only UVB rays, which are much less harmful.  Now most lotions have both UVA and UVB protection.

Message with distractors

this little humous comic demonstrates a message with distractors.  The bright colorful image looks harmless enough, but the message it conveys is very urgent and clear to its audience.

Credible Communicator: Trustworthiness

Regis Philbin, this beloved talk and game show host was diagnosed had two skin cancer lumps removed through two separate procedures called Mohs surgery (also known as chemosurgery). The first lump was a sqaumous-cell cancer that had to be removed from his hand. The second was more serious and on his face. Philbin is yet another in a list of famous people with skin cancer who survived it.

His testemony would make the older generations more aware of seeking treatment for skin cancer, and would be an encouraging spokesperson to younger generations about how to protect your skin and tan responsibly.

Credible Communicator: Relateable

Emma Stone is one of Hollywood's Young Rising Stars.  Her attractiveness and relateable personality make her a great canidate for a spokesperson.  She happens to have fair skin and would probably advocate for safe tanning and skin protection.

Behavior You Want Paired With Something People Like

This image was from an article from the skin foundations website.  The article debates that the effect tanning has on physical appearance trumps the health risks associated with UV ray exposure, especially in the case of indoor tanning.

Since people generally like the physical attributes of babies in comparison to a turtle...if you had to choose which one had the most ideal skin, I think it is pretty obvious who would be the victor would be.

Social Engineering

The relationship between skin cancer and ultraviolet (UV) radiation is well known. In response California Gov. Jerry Brown announced he had signed a bill that prevents children under 18 from using tanning beds. Utah Senator Pat Jones plans to introduce a bill outlawing tanning bed use for teenagers under the age of 18. Lead to a bill moving through the Legislature which would ban indoor tanning by anyone under age 18. The bill would replace a state law now requiring parental permission before young people ages 14-18 can tan artificially.
The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) announced that it has moved UV tanning beds to its highest cancer risk category -- "carcinogenic to humans." (any substance or agent that tends to produce a cancer.) Lead to a 10 percent excise tax on ultraviolet tanning services. This is the first tax being levied under the new health care law.
Most programs promoting sun protection have involved educational interventions designed to teach people that exposure to sun increases the likelihood of skin cancer and that precautionary measures can reduce this risk. Although these programs have been partially successful in improving knowledge related to sun exposure and skin cancer, they have been failing to elicit behavioral change

UV Education in schools: establish policies that reduce exposure to UV radiation, providing and maintaining physical and social environments that support sun safety and that are consistent with the development of other healthy habits, providing health education to teach students the knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral skills they need to prevent skin cancer at age appropriate level with links to opportunities for practicing sun-safe behaviors, involving family members in skin cancer prevention efforts, including skin cancer prevention knowledge and skills in pre-service and in-service education for school administrators, teachers, physical education teachers and coaches, and school nurses, complementing and supporting skin cancer prevention education and sun-safety environments and policies with school health services, and lastly periodically evaluating whether schools are implementing the guidelines on policies, environmental change, education, families, professional development, and health services.

  • The wonderful invention of tanning pills.
  • Wearing a hat and sitting under an umbrella. Or the extreme of just staying inside and wearing clothing to minimally expose bare skin.
  • High pressure tanning beds make it easy for you to have the perfect tan in less time.
  • Sunless tanning booths have been created as well for people who don’t want to expose themselves to ultraviolet light.

History of Tanning

History

Skin color has always been associated with class.  In the renaissance and elizabethen era, women used chalk to whiten their faces to make their skin appear like pale (much like a porcelin doll.) The practice of tanning is the process of skin darkening and has become a growing trend since the beginning of the 20th century.

1920:  Cocoa Chanel's fame, beauty, and her Parisian sunburn started the trend of tanning

1940's: Sunbathing was more accepted and encouraged after bikinis appeared

1950's: Silver metallic UV reflectors were used in the

1962: sunscreen started to be SPF rated which was FDA enforced.

1978: tanning beds were first used.
1980: BMW advertised its convertible as "The Ultimate Tanning Machine”

2012:Today the tanning industry has reached about five billion dollars

Tanning Today

“If you've ever seen a sliced apple turn from white to brown, you've seen how spray-tanning products work on your skin.” This exposure to UV radiation, either by outside sun exposure or with tanning beds, will cause your skin to change color. Many people “sun bath” as a form of a hobby. By exposing yourself to the sun you can benefit by vitamin D, but too much can have terrible effects like sunburn, skin cancer (melanoma) and premature aging. A remedy for this would be sunscreen and limiting exposure to UV rays. Your genetics will affect how quickly or slowly you tan or only burn. Some countries have “clothing optional swimming areas” also known as nude beaches.  These in addition to tan-through swimwear are ways in which one can avoid tanlines, however these alternative methods of tanning offer no refuge from UV rays.  An alternative method to excessive sun/tanning bed is sunless tanner. There are bronzers, tan accelerators, and make up that people just use make up to create a tanned appearance.

Fun Facts from the FDA
  • Spray tanning booths are not FDA approved
  • The tanning controversy it that overexposure to UV radiation is likely to cause skin cancer.
  • Tanning often increases wrinkles and reduces the immune system. Some people think tanning in moderation is healthy.
  • Indoor tanning is over 10 times more likely to give off UVA radiation than the sun
  • Tanning is in the category of “highest cancer risk” next to smoking tobacco.
